The origin of this district’s name derives from the name “mandrie”, “manniri” in Sicilian. In this part of the city, in fact, there are small caves where the ancient Noto inhabitants used to admit herds of sheep. According to another theory, the name could derive from the presence of a votive shrine dedicated to the Madonna delle Grazie, “ ‘a Maronna ‘e Ràzzie” in Sicilian, that in a syncopated way became, for the ancient Noto inhabitants, “Mannarazzi”.
